About NotCollege

The data, the methodology.

What is NotCollege?

NotCollege is a free career-information resource for U.S. high schoolers and adults who want to explore careers that are certification based rather than degree based.

It pairs a curated corpus of 53 non-degree career paths, each with BLS-verified wages, training timelines, state licensure facts, and documented tradeoffs. We also have a guided match that recommends paths from that data based on your answers.

The corpus

The 53 paths were selected for relevance to people heading into non-degree careers: real occupations with defined training routes, observable wage data, and meaningful demand.

How wages are verified

Wage figures go through a multi-stage C2 verification process rather than being taken from a single lookup:

  • Stage 1 — Wage narrative drafting. An initial wage narrative is drafted from BLS knowledge, capturing the median plus the realistic range.
  • Stage 2 — Career ladder mapping. The progression from entry to experienced roles is mapped so a single median doesn't hide the trajectory.
  • Stage 3a / 3b — State board verification. For Priority 1 and Priority 2 paths, licensure and requirement facts are checked directly against state board sources.
  • Stage 3c — Direct web fetch. Figures are verified against BLS directly — the Occupational Outlook Handbook at bls.gov, and the OEWS API, which is where the current May 2025 wages come from.

Workforce Pell, explained

Workforce Pell (WPE) is a federal program that took effect on July 1, 2026, extending Pell Grant funding to short-term workforce-training programs. It matters because it can make a fast, focused training path far more affordable than its sticker price suggests.

A path is structurally eligible only if its training fits under the program's 599-hour ceiling. This is why the Cosmetology license route is structurally ineligible: every state requires at least 1,000 hours of training, and requirements run to 2,100.

Our Workforce Pell tracker follows approval status state by state.

Who's behind this

NotCollege is independent. It is not owned by, funded by, or affiliated with any school, training provider, publisher, or employer. It carries no advertising and no affiliate revenue, and no one can pay to appear here or to change what a path's page says.

That independence is enforced rather than promised. The site's content security policy blocks third-party scripts outright, so there is no ad network and no tracker running here — not by policy, but by construction. You can confirm it yourself in your browser's developer tools.

Where the numbers come from. Wages are read directly from the Bureau of Labor Statistics — the OEWS API for medians and percentiles, the Occupational Outlook Handbook for employment and growth — and refreshed each year when BLS publishes. Licensure facts are checked against state boards. Every path carries its own confidence rating and lists what we haven't verified yet, openly, on the page.

When we get something wrong, we say so. Corrections are published rather than quietly overwritten, because a methodology you can't audit isn't a methodology.

Questions, corrections, or a figure you think is wrong: hello@notcollege.app. A person reads it.

What this isn't

Not a comprehensive career database. Only 53 paths, deliberately focused. We chose depth and verification over breadth.

Not a substitute for talking to real people. Nothing here replaces a conversation with someone actually doing the job.

Not legal, financial, or career-counseling advice. NotCollege is informational only.
